Hello,
I pre-ordered yours and Mrs. Johnson's book "Harlem Godfather" and received it
last week. I couldn't get to read it right away but started reading it
yesterday and completed it late this afternoon. What a book! It was so
interesting I hated to put it down when it was time for bed. I actually
started to read a little slower towards the end of the book because I didn't
want to finish it! I wanted to read more and more.
Is Mrs. Johnson planning to write a book about her life after Bumpy? That
would be an interesting read also. I'd like to know more about Ruthie, Elease
and Margaret and how they survived after Bumpy's death. I am wondering if
Junie kept his promise to Bumpy to take care of Mrs. Johnson - I'm sure he
did.
This is one of the best books I've read in a long, long time. Mrs. Johnson is
an amazing woman to be able to remember all those details. When I get older,
I want to be just like her (smile).
Thank you and Mrs. Johnson for giving us insight and the truth about Bumpy's
life and also for giving us a glimpse of the life styles of our people in
Harlem during the early 1930's through the 40's.
Regards,
Renee P. Davis

Thank You Mrs. Johnson for sharing this true to heart
story about Bumpy Johnson with alot of history intertwined. I looked at American
Gangster and Hollywood have it all wrong. From reading this book about Bumpy's
life, I feel that he helped pave the way and made Harlem what it is to this day,
and his legend still lives thru Harlem. This story was told from his childhood
years until his last days. I felt I truly knew Bumpy Johnson when I read the
book, but while reading, I wished I had not only knew Mr. Johnson, but I wished
only for a glimpse of The Harlem Godfather. This book is told thru his wife's
voice, and it was no fairy tale, but it was told from the heart of a woman who
loved him the most. I not only learned about Bumpy, but I learned about others
such as Lena Horne, Bill "Bojangles", Lucky Luciano, Flash Walker (who Frank
Lucas so wanted his life to be) and Billie Holiday. I was the most amazed at how
a young little boy from the south that came to Harlem and took over. I also have
to give Bumpy his credit whatever he went thru or did, he still loved his people
and did his time like a true man and snitching wasn't even in his vocabulary.
Thanks Mrs. Mayme Johnson and Karen E. Quinones from setting the record straight
for all of America. Thanks for educating me on a part of American History of
Bumpy Johnson, and telling me a story that I will will always know who the real
Bumpy Johnson really was from his start until that last tear from my eyes to the
end of the book!! Bumpy Johnson, Harlem's and America's True Gangster R.I.P. !!

Hello Karen:
I just wanted to congratulate you and Mrs. Johnson on
writing such an excellent book and thank you for including my name in the book
and autographing it as well. I felt so special that I read the book in one
day and put it away sealed in a clear plastic zip lock bag so that I can keep
it book in excellent condition.
I knew it was going to be a good book...but this book
was AWESOME! I've read articles and documentaries about Bumpy before, but the
details Mrs. Johnson included in this book were so clear...I felt I saw a
movie live motion picture. Kudos to Mrs. Johnson for speaking up on behalf of
her late husband! A true lady in all essence of the word! Worthy of
admiration from all her ever have the pleasure of hearing of her and knowing
her.
Thanks again for the autographed copy!
My regards to both you and Mayme!
Sincerely,
Liza Galarza

Dear Karen,
The book was great I really enjoyed reading it and was sorry to see it end.
Mayme is a real live legend from a legendary time. You all have got to do a
speaking engagment so the public can meet her. If you do let me know I'll fly to
NY to have a chance to meet her.
By the way did she ever mention if Bumpy cross paths with West Indian Archie? I
read that he also worked for Schultz. Also to your knowledge did most of the
muscle during the take over of Harlem come from the white's who worked for
Schultz or was that left for the Black hoods like Bub?

Dear Karen
I just wanted to say Thank you, I received the 2 books I ordered yesterday. I
got in from work very late last night but I still read about 1/3 of the book
already. I don't want to put it down.
I wish I could attend your event on the 15th, but my son is singing the national
anthem for the Albany River Rats hockey team.
If your going to have an event with Mrs Johnson I would kill to be there. Again
Congratulations

The book is very informative foremost, and somewhat
entertaining.
Mrs. Johnson is correct when she states on page 145: "...that's why we need more
black people writing books to tell the real history..." of our people.
No, I wasn't at all disappointed. I used the wrong word
"somewhat". I didn't expect it to be entertaining at all. When I read works like
this, my foremost objective is ascertaining facts; and, your book fulfilled
that objective. I'm pleased you wrote it, and I wish more black writers will
follow suit in documenting life histories of our prominent people; and, not
leave it to the fictitious, and usually malevolent portrayal by hollywood, and
writers of other races. Now, I can't get more truthful than this, (smile).
Thanks again.

Hey, Karen!
I received the book the day before yesterday. You know
I read it already!
Damn good read. I may have seen him (Bumpy) when I was a kid. I was born on
Madison and 120th Street. 1835 Madison Avenue.
I have a question though. There are no photos of Dickie
Wells. Ms. Johnson in the book spoke about him extensively. Also, what
happened to the rest of Mr. Johnson's posse? Nat Pettigrew, etc?

I am writing to tell you how much I have enjoyed reading
your book Harlem Godfather. For many years I have searched for information on
Bumpy Johnson and found very little besides second hand information. You made
Bumpy come alive for me and for that I am grateful.
Your book was very well written and one that I
found extremely hard to put down. Please thank Mrs. Mayme Johnson for sharing
her story with those who have long admired Bumpy. I am quite sure that Bumpy
is smiling down on both of you and saying Well-Done!!.
Once again Ms.Quinones I congratulate you on the
wonderful job that you have done and wish you continued sucess.
Very Truly Yours,
James Louis Bacon
